Whats Squash All
About?
The
layout of the Squash Court can be seen from the illustration shown below.
The
game of squash is played between two players. The ball is served by one
player, from a service box, onto the front wall above the cut line, so that on
it rebounds to falls into the opposite back quarter of the court bounded by
the half-court line and the short line.
BASIC RULES
In this
section you will not find a full list of the rules of the game, if you wish to
see the complete rules you can visit the World Squash Federation website (see
link below).
We would
like to get you started as quickly as possible, so listed below are the basic
rules needed to enable you to begin enjoying the game of squash.
HOW TO
PLAY
- Five
minutes of warm up time is permitted for each player before they start the
game, this normally consists of striking the ball for your opponent so
that you can get used to the court and warm up the ball before you start
to play.
- After
warm-up, one player should spin the racket and the other "make the
call" (rough or smooth) to determine who should start.
- The
starting player should always serve from the right service box.
- During
play a player can choose which box he or she wishes to serve from, but can
not serve from the same box twice in a row.
- Play
starts with the server hitting the ball from his or her choice of service
box between the Out Of Court line and the Cut line on the front wall, and
land in the opposite back quarter of the court.
- The
server must then hit the front wall (and all subsequent strikes of the
ball thereafter) and play stops if the ball either bounces out of the Out
Of Court line or does not reach the front wall or bounces twice on the
floor.
